Service Description

When a hull carries decades of antifouling buildup, cratered layers, or requires conversion to a new system such as an epoxy barrier coat, conventional sanding is no longer practical. Bottom Prep Level 4 is a full reset service that strips the underwater surface back to bare gelcoat. We use a certified 1000W Class 4 marine laser system to remove bottom paint with precision. This method eliminates heavy coatings without abrasive blasting, mechanical grinding, or chemical stripping. Old paint layers—including legacy coatings such as VC17—are vaporized and extracted at the source, producing zero runoff, no secondary waste, and no cross-contamination to surrounding vessels or water. This is strictly a precision paint removal service. It does not include application of new antifouling, epoxy barrier coats, fiberglass structural repair, or osmotic blister remediation. If underlying defects are revealed, they are exposed cleanly for subsequent repair. The result is a clean, bare hull ready for proper recoating through our Antifouling Application service. Certified laser eye protection is mandatory for all operators and bystanders during this controlled operation. FAQ Section • Is the laser safe for my boat's fiberglass gelcoat? Yes. The 1000 W Class 4 laser precisely vaporizes the old antifouling paint layers without grinding into or compromising the structural integrity of the underlying gelcoat, unlike aggressive mechanical sanding or media blasting. • Does this service include applying the new bottom paint? No. Level 4 strictly covers the precision laser stripping process. The application of a new epoxy barrier coat or fresh antifouling paint is booked separately. • Why is there a mobilization fee for this service? The 1000 W Class 4 laser system is highly specialized industrial equipment. The $2,500 mobilization fee covers the complex transport, setup, and strict environmental safety containment protocols required to safely operate the laser at your specific boatyard or marina.
