Interior Detailing – Level 4: Mold Remediation, Ozone Treatment, and Intervention

There comes a point where a boat interior stops being "messy" and starts being unsafe. This usually happens after long-term storage, a water leak that went unnoticed, or an unwanted winter guest (like a raccoon or muskrat) made your cabin their home.
Interior Level 4 is our intervention service. It is designed for vessels that are chemically or biologically compromised. If you open the companionway and the smell hits you like a wall, or if you see fuzzy growth on the headliners and bulkheads, routine detailing protocols are no longer sufficient. You need remediation.

What Interior Detailing – Level 4 Service Is Designed to Do
This service is a biological reset. Its primary goal is to neutralize threats—specifically mold, mildew, pest contamination, and the deep-set odors they create.
We are not just trying to make the boat look pretty; we are trying to make it healthy. Success at Level 4 means we have killed the mold spores, removed the pest waste, and neutralized the odor at a molecular level so the vessel is safe to inhabit again.
How the Work Is Performed
Interior Detailing – Level 4 is an industrial process. Our crew typically wears full PPE (Tyvek suits and respirators) because we are disturbing hazardous particulates.
1. Containment & Removal: We physically remove organic buildup and heavily contaminated items.
2. Deep Steam & Enzyme Treatment: We use high-temperature steam combined with specialized enzyme cleaners that digest biological residue rather than just masking it. We treat carpets, upholstery, vinyl, and go deep into lockers and bilges.
3. Cabinetry Detailing: We open every drawer and cupboard to treat the dark spaces where odors linger.
4. Ozone Shock Treatment: Once cleaned, we utilize industrial ozone generators. This saturates the interior with ozone (O3), which oxidizes bacteria and mold spores in the air and hard-to-reach crevices, eliminating odors without perfumes.
What This Service Is Not Intended
For Level 4 is a cleaning and sanitization service, not a restoration of rotted materials. We can kill the mold on a bulkhead, but if the water intrusion has turned the wood into pulp, cleaning cannot bring the structural integrity back.
Similarly, while we treat stains aggressively, fabrics that have been dyed by mildew or rust for years may be permanently discolored. In these cases, we make the surface sanitary, even if the aesthetic damage remains.
Why This Level Matters
Mold and pest waste are respiratory hazards. Ignoring a "musty" smell means you are breathing in active spores every time you sleep on the boat.
Furthermore, biological damage spreads. Mold eats organic materials (leather, wood, cotton). Stopping it now preserves the remaining value of the vessel's interior. This is often the critical step required before listing a neglected boat for sale or enjoying a "new-to-you" purchase that was sat for too long.
When This Level Is the Right Choice
• The "Barn Find": You bought a boat that hasn't been opened in two years.
• The Leak: A hatch leaked all winter, and the V-berth is covered in black/green spots.
• The Pest: You found evidence of mice, raccoons, or muskrats (droppings or nesting material).
• The Smell: The interior odor is persistent and cannot be aired out.

When This Level Is No Longer Enough
Level 4 is the end of the line for cleaning. If we perform this service and the materials are falling apart—for example, if the carpet comes up in clumps or the plywood bulkheads are soft—you have moved beyond detailing into Refit and Construction. At that stage, the interior components need to be removed and replaced by a shipwright or upholsterer.
Closing Recovering a neglected boat is one of the most satisfying things we do.

There is a specific relief in turning a "hazmat zone" back into a comfortable family cruiser.
We bring the equipment and the chemistry to do it safely, so you can breathe easy on the water.
