Bottom Prep Level 3: Correcting Bad Antifouling Before We Protect

In the fresh waters of Ontario, bottom paint is often treated like a band-aid. Year after year, owners (or untrained yard hands) slap a new coat over the old one without checking the foundation.
The result isn't protection; it's failure.
Bottom Prep Level 3 (BP03)
exists because painting over a compromised surface is a waste of money. When paint peels, flakes, or creates a "moon surface" of craters, it is proof that the previous layers were not prepped properly. At this level, we stop adding to the problem. We aggressively correct the substrate so your new antifouling actually performs.
What This Service Is Designed to Do
This service solves the problem of adhesion failure and mechanical interference.
When bottom paint is applied over slime, loose paint, or unprepared gelcoat, it inevitably lifts. This creates drag and exposes your hull to osmosis. Furthermore, lazy painting leads to "paint creep"—where layers build up on moving parts until they seize.
Success at this level means the flaking is removed, the "craters" are feathered out, and the hull is mechanically sound. We are establishing a stable, sanded base that is ready to accept and hold new protection.
How the Work Is Performed
This is not a wash. It is an aggressive mechanical intervention.
1. Assessment: We identify loose layers and interference points.
2. Aggressive Sanding: Using heavy-grit mechanical sanders and dust extraction, we remove the failed layers of paint down to a solid base.
3. Hardware Liberation: We manually scrape and sand paint accumulation away from moving parts.
4. The Transom Gap: We specifically clear the area between the outdrive assembly and the transom (more on this below).

The "Spike" Standard: Functionality First
A major focus of BP03 is correcting the laziness of the past. We target three specific pet peeves that ruin boat performance:
1. The Transom Stress Gap Outdrives must have a "paint gap" between the gimbal housing and the transom. Lazy painters paint right over this rubber seal/gap.

• Why we fix it: You must be able to visually inspect this seal. If it is caked in paint, you cannot detect transom stress cracks or seal failure until water is already in the bilge. We re-establish this safety gap.
2. Trim Tabs and Hydraulic Struts We frequently see hydraulic struts and trim tabs that are "frozen" or limited in travel because years of paint have hardened around the cylinders and hinges.
• The Fix: We remove the interference. If a strut can't compress because of paint buildup, your trim system fails.
3. Through-Hull Fittings Scuppers, intakes, and transducers often get painted shut or clogged. We clear these ensuring they flow as designed.

What This Service Is Not Intended For
• It is not a full gelcoat reset: If you want 100% of the paint gone to see bare white gelcoat, that is Bottom Prep Level 4 (Laser Removal).
• It is not for racing finishes: This creates a sound bottom, not a blue-printed racing bottom.
• It implies no structural repair: We remove paint; we do not fiberglass over blisters or cracks found underneath (though we will flag them).
Why This Level Matters
A rough bottom is slow and inefficient. But a jammed bottom is dangerous. By freeing up your trim tabs and clearing your transom gaps, we return the vessel to its engineered functionality.
More importantly, paint is expensive. If you pay for premium antifouling and apply it over flaking old paint, you are literally throwing money into the lake. BP03 ensures your investment sticks.
When This Level Is the Right Choice
Choose Level 3 if:
• Your hull looks like the surface of the moon (craters).
• Paint is visibly flaking off in sheets.
• You cannot see the rubber seal on your transom assembly.
• Your trim tabs look like solid blocks of paint rather than moving metal plates.

When This Level Is No Longer Enough
If the paint buildup is measured in millimeters rather than microns, or if you are switching from a banned paint (like VC17) to a new system, sanding is messy and often insufficient.
In that case, we escalate to Bottom Prep Level 4 (Laser Removal). The laser vaporizes decades of buildup without the dust, giving you a factory-fresh start.
Next Steps
We see to correcting things before protecting things. If your bottom is a mess, let’s fix the foundation.
